Prison guard who ‘nearly died’ after attack by killer Carl Langdell receives £600,000

A prison guard who was brutally attacked by the Plenty of Fish Killer has received £600,000 in compensation.

The injured security guard, whose name was not disclosed, was “nearly killed” in a four-minute attack by killer Carl Langdell.

The 50-year-old police officer was attacked so badly that he was no longer able to carry out his duties. But the fact that Langdell had an “easy time” during his time behind bars made things even worse, he told the Mirror.

Langdell was sentenced to a minimum term of 26 years after confessing to the murder of young teacher Katie Locke and the sexual abuse of her corpse.

He strangled Miss Locke in a hotel room, hours after a first date arranged through the website Plenty of Fish.

The injured security guard recalled the attack he suffered at the hands of Langdell, saying, “He attacked me. He punched me in the face, shattered my eye socket and threw me against a wall. He started strangling me and almost broke my neck.”

The officer, who now works as a postman, had to wait eight years for his compensation before it was finally awarded to him at Luton District Court.

He added: “What really made me angry was that the day after the attack, two physical education teachers carried a rowing machine through the prison… allowing him to continue his exercise program.”

“This made things worse. The reason I’m speaking out is because I’ve come to the conclusion that this kind of abuse should never happen to anyone else. I was treated very badly and the compensation I received reflects the psychological trauma I went through as well as the physical injuries.”

Langdell, who lied to Miss Locke that he was a lawyer, wrapped his victim’s body in a blanket and disposed of it next to a container on the grounds of the four-star hotel.

Langdell died on February 11, 2021 at the age of 31 after suffering serious injuries in his cell in Wakefield

Months before the murder, he escaped prison for threatening to kill a community nurse.

Instead, he received a suspended sentence for threatening the woman, which he said was an attempt to shock the psychiatric hospital staff and attract their attention.

After the murder, Langdell called his mother a “monster” and claimed he killed Miss Locke during a sex game gone wrong.

He had told a psychiatric hospital employee that nine months before the murder he had had fantasies in which he slit a girl’s throat, saw her naked and had sex with her corpse.

In 2021, Langdell died in prison after his “throat was slit”. He was found in his cell by guards at Wakefield Prison in West Yorkshire with severe injuries to his neck.

According to The Sun, prison guards became aware of the incident after hearing noises coming from the mentally ill killer’s solitary confinement cell.

A source told the newspaper: “He was found in his cell with his throat slit.”
