Driver dies in collision between car and sheriff's SUV in Apple Valley

A man died in a collision between his car and a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department SUV at an intersection in Apple Valley, local authorities said.

The fatal accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Bear Valley and Kiowa Road, according to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District logs.

A deputy was responding to a “priority call,” said Mara Rodriguez, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department, when the vehicle collided with a Toyota Corolla at the intersection.

The driver of the Toyota was the only occupant and died at the scene, according to Rodriguez. The deputy was treated for minor injuries, she added.

Video footage from the scene of the accident shows that both vehicles suffered significant damage to the front.

It was not immediately clear whether the officer was driving with his blue lights and siren on at the time of the accident.

Further details were not available Saturday afternoon as the investigation was still in its early stages.

The intersection was expected to remain closed into the evening while authorities investigated.
