NOPD launches investigation into response to Leonidas murder

The New Orleans Police Department has initiated a formal Public Integrity Bureau disciplinary investigation into officers who responded to a homicide in the Leonidas neighborhood early Saturday morning.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and NOPD Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier released few new details about the case itself. They said the NOPD wants to make sure the families of the parties involved in the case “have all the information” before releasing more details. However, Kirkpatrick said this was “an act of gun violence.”

Ganthier said the case was possibly a murder-suicide. He said the PIB’s investigation was the result of complaints from family members about the response and response time. Ganthier said the investigation is intended to “not only inform the family of what happened, but also to ensure that our officers are held accountable for any incidents.”

Kirkpatrick says investigators are trying to resolve a number of “complexities” surrounding the case.

“We actually responded to an earlier call that night,” Kirkpatrick said. “The officer went out. He tried to make contact at the house.”

NOPD officers found a man and woman dead at the scene shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday after responding to a call on Monroe Street near Oak Street. If you know anything about the case, call the NOPD at 504-658-5300 or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
