Gang attacks police officers during serial burglary and flees with suspect

The episode could have been straight out of a Hollywood movie – a group of thieves ambushed a police vehicle carrying one of their comrades, who was arrested in connection with a series of burglaries, attacked the policemen in the vehicle and fled with their friend. In short, that is exactly what happened on Friday night under the Betageri railway underpass in Gadag. A case has been filed in connection with the shocking incident at the Betageri police station.

A senior police officer in Gadag district was understandably angry and warned the organisers and perpetrators of the escape operation that law enforcement agencies knew how to do this and would instill fear of the law in them. “These miscreants who attacked policemen and fled with their friend will be taught a lesson,” the senior police officer said.

Police officers from Gangavathi town in Koppal district had arrived in Gadag on the trail of a thief suspected of committing a series of burglaries in Jayanagar in Gangavathi. They then arrested Amjad Ali Irani, a resident of SM Krishna Nagar in Gadag, and were on their way back to Koppal when they were attacked. When Amjad was arrested, a group of five to six people were said to have created a scene.

Gangavathi police station assistant inspector Shivasharanagowda, constable Mylarappa Sompur, havaldar Marigowda Hosmani and driver Sharanappa Thimmanagowdru were injured in the attack on the car. The injured policemen are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gadag. BS Nemagowda, senior police officer in Gadag, called the injured policemen to enquire about their well-being.
