Why was the match between Germany and Denmark cancelled? Euro 2024 match interrupted after weather warning as thunderstorm hits Dortmund

The 2024 European Championship match between Germany and Denmark had to be interrupted on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions in Dortmund.

The game was interrupted during the first half because thunder and lightning were heard and seen near Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.

Referee Michael Oliver paused action and led the players to the touchline while he consulted with competition officials on the best course of action, before leading an exodus from the pitch and the players’ benches through the tunnel.

Sporting News explains what happened.

Why was the Euro 2024 match between Germany and Denmark interrupted?

The round of 16 match of the 2024 European Championship between Germany and Denmark had to be interrupted due to an approaching storm in the Dortmund region.

Thunder and lightning preceded rain and hail. Water could be seen pouring down from the stadium roof after players and staff were led into the stadium.

The game, which was 0-0 at the time, was finally resumed after a long interruption once the threat of storms had subsided.

After 15 minutes, players were allowed back on the pitch for a five-minute warm-up before play resumed. Play resumed with Toni Kroos for Germany – the hosts had the ball when play was stopped – and the clock restarted at 34:55.

Will the clock stop if a football match is interrupted due to weather?

Many fans noticed that the game clock was not stopped even after the game was interrupted.

On television networks, including FOX in the United States, the clock on the scoreboard continued to run even after the players left the field after play was stopped.

However, this was probably more of a problem with the television graphics. The official game clock was stopped when the game was interrupted and only started again at 34:55.
