Rain and storms expected in central North Carolina on Sunday

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — The CBS 17 Weather Team has declared Sunday a Storm Team Alert Day due to possible storms this afternoon and evening.

A cold front will move through the Triangle on Sunday, with rain and storms expected. Areas directly north of the Triangle, toward the Virginia border, are under a Severe Level 2 risk, and the rest of Central North Carolina is under a Level 2 risk.

The main danger from the storms is destructive straight-line winds; the risk of tornadoes and hail is close to zero.

This is the first widespread storm threat for the Triangle in weeks. With a Level 2 risk in place for parts of Central NC, Sunday will be a CBS 17 Storm Team Alert Day.

Rainfall amounts will range from 1pm to 10pm, with most areas seeing between 0.5 and 1 inch, but areas receiving the heaviest downpours/storms may see 1 to 2 inches.

We need the rain, and it’s coming just in time before the dry heat dome returns and settles over the Carolinas just in time for the Fourth of July.

On Monday and Tuesday, maximum temperatures will (finally!) drop to over 30 degrees, before reaching almost three-digit levels again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
