Luke Crosbie died in a workplace tragedy

A close-knit community in County Kilkenny has been “shaken” by the death of a local teenager.

Luke Crosbie (17), of Nuenna Court, Freshford, Kilkenny, died on a building site near the village in north Kilkenny on Thursday afternoon, June 27.

He had only completed his A-levels a week earlier at the nearby Colaiste Mhuire vocational school in Johnstown. Staff and students at the school are shocked by the incident.

It is believed Luke was working on building work at a relative’s house at the time of the tragedy. Gardaí and emergency services have been informed of the incident in Freshford.

Gardaí confirmed that a young teenage man later died at the scene. They also said the Health and Safety Executive “has been informed and will conduct its own investigations”.

Kilkenny County Council’s Cathaoirleach, Michael McCarthy (FF), of Freshford, sent his condolences to the family and said the village and wider community were “in a state of shock” and “numb” following the incident. Councillor McCarthy, who knows the family, added: “It is incredibly sad,” he said.

“The family is well known and respected in the area and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”

He added: “All we can do now is offer our support as a community. I am sure numerous people will come forward during this time.” He also asked the media to respect the family’s privacy at this very difficult time.

Luke leaves behind his parents Kathleen and Nigel, his brothers Hakim and Jack and his sister Zoe. No funeral arrangements have been made at this time.
