An XL bully dog ​​was shot dead by police after a woman was attacked and injured.

Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to Gladstone Road in Eccles at 9pm on Friday after receiving several reports of a dangerously out-of-control dog.

Police said: “Neither local officials nor the public were initially able to bring the dog under control.

“Specialist officers were deployed and attempted to secure the XL Bully, but to no avail. Unfortunately, this meant that he was killed on the spot as a last resort due to the risk of harm he caused as a prohibited breed.”

Two men were arrested, police said. The woman is still being treated for her injuries.

Police said: “We understand the concern this incident has caused among the public, but our officers have a duty to regularly respond to challenging situations to ensure the safety of everyone.”

Since the beginning of this year, owning the XL Bully breed has been a criminal offence in England and Wales without a special permit.

Anyone who owns one of these dogs must, among other things, have their animal neutered, microchipped, and wear a muzzle and keep it on a leash in public.
