Man suffers life-changing injuries in Lake Merritt shooting – NBC Bay Area

One of the victims of the mass shooting near Lake Merritt in Oakland earlier this month spoke out on Friday.

Mason Ma said the June 19 shooting that left 15 people injured changed the life of her brother Mason, who was shot three times as he was on his way to get food.

“I just want to feel safe in the neighborhood where I work,” he said.

Several groups of people had gathered near the lake. Then a young man walked up to Ma, pulled out a gun and fired the first shot.

Mason took cover next to an SUV, where he was shot two more times, once in the right thigh and once in the left thigh.

“I’m watching a sideshow going on and suddenly someone starts shooting,” he said. “I heard a noise and then there was a little chaos, people started running and then I felt the first shot in my hand, my finger, and I felt the pain.”

Mom only had his phone, but someone took it.

I said he felt like it took the ambulance a while to get there and treat him.

After being examined, he was taken to a nearby hospital. Ma has undergone two surgeries so far and has more to come.

His finger was amputated and he said he still cannot move his right leg.

“I go there because I think it’s a safe environment. I just want a safe environment for people, that’s all,” Ma said.

Ma said he felt “kind of lost” and claimed the police had not contacted him yet.

Meanwhile, Oakland police on Friday announced a summer security plan – a strategy that was planned before the shooting, and not a concrete response to it.

“There is increased police presence throughout the city,” said Deputy Police Chief James Beere. “We are also working with some of our external partners at the local, state and federal levels.”

The increased patrols are scheduled to begin on Saturday.
