Scorching heat, increased storm risk and more rain next week

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Almost record-breaking heat today: Our taste of summer continues today as high temperatures climb into the lower to mid 90s. We’ll flirt with today’s record high in Baton Rouge, which is 95° and dates back to 1922. A few scattered showers are possible this morning, but most of us should stay dry during the day.

Storms are possible tonight

Isolated storms appear to be possible this evening, with the greatest threat to areas north of the highways. The storms will be associated with an upper air disturbance moving west to east along an approaching cold front.

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded areas north of the state line to a level 3/5 (elevated) severe weather risk. Damaging winds are the biggest concern, but hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible.

Scattered showers remain possible until a cool front moves through early Friday, but any rain threat should end shortly after daybreak for most of us. Only a slight cooling is expected now, with highs possibly around 90 degrees on Friday.

Mother’s Day weekend

Temperatures and humidity are likely to drop more significantly at the weekend. Readings will be much closer to normal, with lows in the low to mid 60s. and highs in the low to mid 80s.

Saturday will remain completely dry and the chance of rain for a good portion of Mother’s Day appears to be minimal. But the chance of rain and storms will increase Sunday night as a disturbance approaches from the west.

Unclear pattern next week

Widespread rain is expected until Monday, some of which could be heavy locally. And while Monday looks to be the wettest day at the moment, scattered rain is possible for most of next week.

Rainfall amounts

Rainfall amounts continue to trend upward, with the latest 7-day forecast from the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) showing areas near and north of the highways receiving 3 to 5 inches of rain, while areas south of I-10 will fall into the 2nd ″ to 3″ range.

WPC has also already reported a level 2/4 (minor) flood risk across the board for Monday.
