Flag ceremony for Andrew Pontious, LA County firefighter killed in front loader explosion in Littlerock

LOS ANGELES (CNS) — A flag ceremony was held Friday for fallen Los Angeles County firefighter Andrew Pontious, who died in the line of duty.

On June 14, Pontious, 52, lost his life while fighting a fire after a burning front-end loader exploded at a Littlerock quarry. He had been with the fire service for nearly 20 years and had recently been assigned to a four-person fire engine at Station 93 in Palmdale.

An official flag ceremony was held at the station on Friday, featuring firefighters in Class A uniforms, shrouds for the badges, bagpipers, a bell service, a bugler, crossed ladders and an honor guard.

Pontious was described as a respected member of the department who had 19 years of dedicated service. Throughout his career, he served the communities of El Monte, Palmdale, Rosemead and San Fernando. According to the department, he was known for his exemplary work ethic, unwavering positive attitude and genuine love of helping people.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Firefighter Andrew Pontious,” said Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone. “Andrew was a dedicated firefighter, husband, father, son, brother and friend to many. He was our hero and his sacrifice and memory will never be forgotten.”

Pontious was described as an experienced firefighter who was competent and approachable. According to the department, new firefighters could count on his leadership and mentorship. When a new battalion chief arrived, Pontious would guide him through the team.

He was also a good cook and did volunteer work outside of his working hours, the department reported.

Pontious, affectionately known as “Uncle” in the department, enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, and studying wildlife. His passion for conservation was well known among his colleagues and friends.

To ensure appropriate care and support for Pontious’ family and friends, Marrone activated clergy, a peer support team, mental health professionals and the department’s memorial management team.

Pontious leaves behind his parents, brother (a retired fire captain), wife and stepdaughter. “The fire department extends our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Pontious family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Pontious’ memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cottonwood Church, 4505 Katella Ave., Los Alamitos. The public is invited to attend.
