The Undertaker reports on the fire incident in the Elimination Chamber

During his 30-year career, Undertaker Thumbnails was injured many times. One of the most terrifying moments for him was Elimination Chamber 2010. His pyro set him on fire. The WWE Hall of Fame member appeared on “Insight” with Chris Van Vliet and recalled in detail what happened during that terrifying incident and what happened afterward.

“Yeah, that was pretty hairy,” he said. “I’m standing in my usual spot, head down, waiting for the lift. The pyro ball on the left is coming up and coming up right on my left side. It’s so hot. I’m not going to sell something for as long as I can until I can’t stand it anymore.”

So I turned to the right to get out of the fireball and then (the right one) went off. Now I’m in the middle of it. Everyone’s going crazy and trying to cover me. “He wants to get in this fight. He’s running to the ring.”

So I come out of this pyro ball and I see that my hat is on fire and my right sleeve is on fire.”

Last-minute wardrobe savings

Luckily for the Undertaker, he decided to wear his long-sleeved duster coat that night instead of his sleeveless “Hellraiser” coat.

This last minute decision gave him additional protection from the flames. Sitting in the chamber capsule, he fumed, remembering the meeting with the pyrotechnician two weeks ago. During that meeting, he had told the technician that he felt the placement of the pyro was inappropriate for the event; again, he was not listened to.

“I look down and see blisters forming on my chest. I’m getting angrier and angrier. I said, ‘Look, if that guy is backstage when I get back, I’m going to kill him.’

And I meant it.” The Undertaker’s account makes it clear what unexpected dangers wrestlers can face, even from elements designed to enhance the show. His experience at Elimination Chamber 2010 makes one take very seriously the dangers of professional wrestling that go beyond scripted drama and physical strength.

Despite the incident, The Undertaker performed again, proving once again how strong he is in his chosen profession, both physically and mentally. His story shows the danger and unpredictability of every move in professional wrestling – so protective measures and safety protocols are necessary to keep the athlete safe from danger.
