Rape: Retired army gunner sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping orphan girl | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: A 17-year-old orphan girl was waiting at a bus stop in Secunderabad when a man approached her and started a conversation with her. He also asked her if she wanted some food and forcibly took her on his bike and got her food from a nearby hotel. Later, he took her to a hotel and raped her twice. He dropped her off at Secunderabad railway station and fled. This incident took place on a morning in July 2017. Seven years later, the man, a 66-year-old retired gunner of the Indian Army, was convicted of raping the girl and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The accused, Periyati Sridharan, was 59 and had retired from the army when he sexually abused the girl, who is now 24 and completing her graduation. Delivering the verdict on Friday, B Pushpalatha, special judge in cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) in Hyderabad, also awarded the rape victim Rs 500,000 in compensation. During the trial, the girl gave a graphic account of how she was forcibly abducted and raped. The testimony of the head of the nursing home where she was kept and medical evidence were crucial, said additional public prosecutor K Prathap Reddy. The orphan girl was staying at the nursing home and learning tailoring at an institute in Secunderabad. When she was on her way to the tailoring institute, Sridharan approached her. The girl first informed the head of the nursing home about her ordeal and three days later filed a complaint with the police. Sridharan, a resident of Yapr-al, was subsequently arrested.
