Community mourns the loss of popular teacher and son who died in accident

PIKE COUNTY, Alabama (WTVY) – The Pike County community is coping with the sudden loss of a local teacher and her son.

Heather Minton and her 8-year-old son were killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday evening, according to Brundidge Police Chief Sam C. Green.

Minton taught science at Pike County High School and was named Teacher of the Year in 2023.

Many expressed their sadness for Minton and her family on social media.

“My heart breaks for the entire PCHS family and the students who have leaned on you in and out of the classroom,” Shelby Spaziani, a special education teacher at Pike County High School, said in a post on her Facebook page. “The support you and the boys have shown to every student and athlete who has worn the purple and white has been unmatched.”

Former student Cortney Nichole Buzzan wrote in a Facebook post: “To know Heather-Powell Minton was to love her. She didn’t have a single problem. It was an honor to have her teach in high school. The Pike County community will miss her greatly.”

The Brundidge Methodist Church has set up an account where volunteers can make donations at any Troy Bank & Trust.
