“Major incident”: Houses evacuated due to suspicious package

After a suspicious package was found in Nottingham, several streets were closed.

Emergency services arrived at Allington Avenue in the Lenton area at around 2pm BST on Friday and set up a large cordon.

People were advised to stay away from the area while residents of Allington Avenue and surrounding streets were evacuated “as a precautionary measure”.

Road closures along Derby Road between the Welby Avenue and Harrington Drive junctions will remain in place for “some time,” Nottinghamshire Police said.

Jean Jeffery, 78, lives with her husband Tim Jeffery, 65, and daughter Brianna, 20, on nearby Park Road.

Mr and Mrs Jeffrey were among those evacuated and are awaiting further information from emergency services.

She said: “I think it’s just this not knowing what’s happening that makes me feel a little uneasy.

“We asked if we needed accommodation and they told us to just wait at the end of the street.

“The neighbors across the street have been told to find a hotel. It’s very confusing.”

Brianna added: “Mom called me so I immediately went on Facebook and read that it was breaking news.

“My friend and I were in shock and literally ran back to make sure everyone was okay.”

A police spokesman said: “This is an ongoing incident and we are treating it as a major incident along with other emergency services and will provide regular further updates on our website and social media.”

At the crime scene

By Rob Sissons, BBC East Midlands Today

I have spoken to local residents who seem perplexed by what is happening.

Some have arrived at the barrier and found that they are currently denied access.

People don’t seem to know what’s going on, even though a lot of people in this area are students and are finding other places to go.

Police officers are stationed and barriers have been set up in at least four side streets of Derby Road.
