Man dies in SAPD custody, investigation ongoing, officials say

Police said life-saving measures were administered to the man, including the use of Narcan.

SAN ANTONIO – An investigation is ongoing into the death of a man in police custody Thursday night, authorities said.

San Antonio Police responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of S. Flores Street.

The caller told police that a man was behaving erratically and walking around a store in his underwear.

According to police, witnesses tried unsuccessfully to calm the man down. When an officer arrived, he approached the man and struggled with him before immediately handcuffing him.

While the man was being held, his body went limp, according to police, whereupon the officer immediately removed his handcuffs and attempted life-saving measures, including the use of Narcan.

Paramedics arrived and continued life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Bexar County Coroner identified the man as 45-year-old Amadeo Danis Garcia Deleon. The coroner will conduct a death investigation to determine the cause of death.

This is an ongoing investigation.
