A former police officer has been arrested after it emerged he was allegedly leading a “double life”.

Kevin Sypher had previously worked as a sheriff’s deputy in Colorado in the US before he was arrested on allegations that he repeatedly committed frauds against family, friends and colleagues totaling thousands of dollars.

Additionally, it was also alleged that the former police officer married his second wife while he was still married to his first.

Sypher was charged with two counts of theft and two counts of fraud and two misdemeanor counts of misconduct.

After his arrest on April 2, he was held in the Teller County Jail with his bond set at $100,000, according to court records.

An investigation into Sypher was launched after a doctor reportedly filed a complaint saying Sypher had asked for help with a fake crisis negotiation training scenario.

Investigators found that at least seven people gave money to Sypher after he claimed he had cancer and needed large amounts of money to cover treatment costs.

During the crisis negotiation role play, the doctor claimed that a “role player” was called in to read a script that Sypher had written.

This script detailed how Sypher was suffering from multiple tumors and had stopped taking a chemotherapy drug.

It later emerged that the character in the scenario was Sypher’s second wife, an affidavit states.

The investigation also revealed that Sypher allegedly asked for money by saying he was divorcing his first wife and that his bank accounts had been frozen.

He is said to have married a second wife while still married to someone else.

The affidavit also states that he told his second wife that he had “terminal cancer” and convinced her to marry him so he could live with her as one of his final wishes.

However, Sypher’s second wife has also made allegations that he set up scenarios, such as a break-in, that were intended to make her feel unsafe at home.

Between March 2022 and March 2023, Sypher reportedly received around $20,000 in monetary donations.

Examinations of his credit cards and bank statements revealed that this money was spent on vacations, dance lessons, entertainment and fast food, among other things.

Sypher was fired from his position at the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in August 2023 in his absence due to his disappearance four months earlier. He was only found again when he was arrested on April 2, 2024.

The case continues.
