Patterson man arrested in connection with 11 car break-ins and other warrants

BAYOU L’OURSE, La. (KLFY) – A Patterson man was arrested and charged with multiple car break-ins in Assumption Parish. Warrants were also issued for his arrest in other parishes, authorities said.

Gregory Joseph Payne, 21, of Patterson is charged with 11 counts of grand theft auto stemming from a 2022 investigation in the Bayou L’Ourse area.

Assumption Parish officials identified 11 vehicles that were broken into in the Griffin Court area on or about Jan. 22, 2022. Officers found electronic evidence that led to the identification of a suspect vehicle that has been linked to other burglaries in the Gibson and Stephensville areas, officials said.

Investigators identified several suspects, one of whom was Payne, and were able to locate Payne in the area at the time the crime was committed, authorities said.

Payne has been charged in multiple jurisdictions. He was transferred from the St. Mary Parish Jail to the custody of the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday. He was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of 11 counts of simple theft of a car and warrants issued for his arrest by the St. Martin Parish and Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Offices.

Payne will remain in custody pending a bail hearing, officials said.
