CARMEL, Ind. – One person was found dead, another was seriously injured and a firefighter suffered minor injuries in a fire at a shopping center in Carmel early Thursday.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. on May 9, Carmel Police Department officers responding to a welfare check in the 9800 block of North Michigan Road, north of West 96th Street, found a woman screaming for help in the street and suffering from severe burns. Carmel Fire Department spokesman Tim Griffin told 13News.

A fire was discovered at a nearby shopping center and when firefighters arrived they found heavy fire coming through the roof of the building.

Crews worked to extinguish the fire for an extended period of time and withdrew from the building at some point after the ceiling collapsed.

A male victim was found dead inside the building.

The female victim was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis. A Carmel firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Griffin said it is believed the fire started in a kitchen at one of the stores. A massage parlor and a café were badly damaged by the fire.

Michigan Road is closed in both directions near West 98th Street.
