VSP: One dead after accident on I-81 in Washington County, Virginia | WJHL

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — One person is dead and another is seriously injured following a crash on Interstate 81 in Washington County, Virginia Wednesday evening.

According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), a 2006 Pontiac minivan was traveling north on I-81 and struck the rear of a 2020 Kia Forte that had come to a stop due to an earlier accident.

The Kia was then installed into a 2018 Toyota Camry, which resulted in the Camry being installed into a 2015 Buick Encore.

The driver of the Pontiac, identified by police as Robert W. Nipper, 51, of Saltville, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, VSP reported.

The driver of the Kia suffered serious injuries. According to VSP, the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

The drivers of the Camry and the Buick were uninjured in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.
