‘Drunk’ jockeys suspended after night degenerated into argument over smashed phone

Both riders were immediately disqualified from the race by officials after they were found to have engaged in “violent conduct” in a changing room at the racetrack.

Jockey Kenichi Ikezoe was suspended after being involved in a brawl with another jockey

A restaurant visit by two jockeys, which ended in a fight, has led to the suspension of two riders.

Kenichi Ikezoe, one of Japan’s best riders, and Akira Tomita were among a group of several jockeys who went to a restaurant for dinner.

But in the early hours of the following morning, according to the Japan Racing Association, the two engaged in “violent acts” in a changing room at the racetrack.

As a result, 44-year-old Ikezoe was suspended for four days and 27-year-old Tomita for two days. Both were replaced for their rides on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Netkeiba.com, the JRA was alerted by stable officials to the incident, which occurred on Monday, after which both jockeys and other witnesses were interviewed.

Netkeiba reported that Ikezoe and Tomita had dinner at a restaurant in Hakodate. “Both were drunk and Ikezoe behaved rudely toward Tomita, for example,” the report said.

“Tomita could not stand this behavior and slammed a smartphone lying next to it on the table, breaking the screen. But the phone belonged to Ikezoe.

“After that, Ikezoe and Tomita got into an argument, but another jockey present separated the two and Ikezoe went back to the training room first.
