Police shooting in Cincinnati near Music Hall: Man killed after chase

Cincinnati police shot and killed an armed man suspected of stabbing a woman Thursday night, Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said.

The police pursuit following the stabbing and shooting prompted the city of Cincinnati to tweet that an “emergency” had occurred near the Music Hall at 7:21 p.m. About 15 minutes later they gave the all-clear.

The stabbing victim, whose name was not released, is in critical condition and underwent surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Theetge said.

What happened near the Cincinnati Music Hall?

An armed man was shot dead by police outside the Cincinnati Music Hall in Over-the-Rhine on Thursday night.

The City of Cincinnati issued an alert on X that there was an “emergency” in the area. The alert was issued around 7:20 p.m. and lifted about 15 minutes later. Several events were taking place in the area at the time, including the premiere of the opera “La Traviata” at the Music Hall.

Theetge said the man is a suspect in a stabbing incident in District 3, which includes Cincinnati’s West Side neighborhoods.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and pulled out a gun, Theetge said. Police ordered the man to put down his weapon. When he didn’t, officers shot him.

The name of the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not released by police.

Theetge said she did not know how many police officers shot the person. Witnesses reported hearing at least five shots.

The suspect’s car was parked for hours with two flat tires on Elm Street south of the Music Hall. Neither passersby nor police officers were injured in the incident, Theetge said.

“So it is of course very unfortunate that an incident like this happens anywhere in our city, but especially when it happens in front of a jewel of our city like the Music Hall,” Theetge said, adding that the shooting was a “one-off incident.”

What triggered the police persecution

Police investigating a stabbing on Cincinnati’s West Side received a description of the vehicle the suspect exited in. Police followed the vehicle to Elm Street in front of the Music Hall.
