2 Retreat Behavioral Health executives found dead

Retreat Behavioral Health has offices in Connecticut, Florida and Pennsylvania. Last week, the Connecticut offices were closed without warning, raising many questions.

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — Editor’s note: This video originally aired on June 25.

Two executives at a mental health center are dead, and employees in Connecticut, Florida and Pennsylvania are searching for answers after locations were abruptly closed and no pay was paid.

It started last week when Retreat Behavioral Health posted on Facebook that Peter Schorr, the company’s founder and CEO, had died on June 21. Reports confirmed that Schorr had committed suicide.

After Schorr’s death, 160 employees at the retreat’s New Haven location were left in the dark as the inpatient and outpatient facilities there closed. A spokesman for the New Haven location said the Palm Beach, Florida, location also closed around the same time.

“We grieve with them, but we still need answers as to what is going on,” said Ronald Waters, a professional driver at Retreat Behavioral Health.

Retreat Behavioral Health is a drug and alcohol rehab facility with outpatient and inpatient care. It also offers psychotherapy and counseling for patients without a history of drug abuse, as well as treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.

Waters said he received emails announcing the closure during his shift after Schorr’s death. The New Haven retreat location’s spokesperson said Tuesday they were unsure if the closure was permanent or temporary.

Employees expressed sadness over Schorr’s death while voicing concerns that they would not be paid and that patients would be fired. In addition, they have also been locked out of their emails since Wednesday, according to the New Haven Independent.

And they are not the only ones.

Five days after Schorr’s death, Florida authorities confirmed the death of Chief Administrative Officer Scott Korogodsky. According to sister station FOX43 in Pennsylvania, Korogodsky had sent emails to employees at the retreat’s Pennsylvania branches earlier in the week announcing the branch closures.

On June 26, Korogodsky was found dead in his home in Lantana, Florida, according to authorities. He had committed suicide.

FOX43 was also told that the company had already paid its employees earlier this month and missed the last pay period entirely. According to internal emails obtained by FOX43, Retreat’s leadership has acknowledged the previous payment delays and blamed problems with the payroll system.

According to FOX43, employees reported that the company has not paid their health and life insurance since April, but the costs continue to be deducted from their paychecks along with 401k contributions.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division is investigating the situation.

As for the Connecticut sites, the state Department of Health confirmed it was on site last week to review the process of transferring patients to other treatment centers or homes.
