First weather warning day: Dangerous heat returns

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – FIRST WEATHER WARNING DAYS will remain in effect on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with highs of around 30 degrees and heat index values expected to reach well over 38 degrees at times.

DANGEROUS HEAT

Be prepared for extreme heat and humidity to return to the Midwestern United States starting today and continuing through the weekend.

Highs will rise to below 35 degrees and even above 35 degrees this afternoon, with humidity increasing rapidly throughout the day. The humidity will make it feel like 38-41 degrees at times this afternoon. The day will be mostly sunny, and while I can’t completely rule out isolated claps of thunder, most, if not all of us, will stay dry.

Tonight it will be warm and uncomfortable with lows of around 24 degrees.

THIS WEEKEND

Saturday will be the hottest and most humid day, with temperatures mostly above 35 degrees, with one or two places where temperatures may even reach above 35 degrees in the afternoon. Humidity will feel like 40-43 degrees in the afternoon.

Watch for sudden thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. While the storms will most likely remain isolated, any severe weather can bring heavy rain and gusty winds. Areas along and north of I-40 are forecast to receive a thunderstorm level of 1/5 on our Severity Danger Scale.

A few more storms will develop Saturday night and into the first half of Sunday, but I expect the area to become drier later Sunday afternoon. Highs on Sunday will be a little lower, mostly around 90 degrees, but as the humidity continues, temperatures will still feel like they’ll be above 100 degrees.

NEXT WEEK

On Monday there will be a break from the worst of the heat and humidity, with temperatures generally falling to over 25 degrees. But the sun will also shine on Monday.

A return of more dangerous heat is expected from Tuesday, and we have several FIRST WEATHER WARNING DAYS once again for the Middle State. Highs Tuesday through Thursday will be between 35 and 40 degrees, with heat index values again between 38 and 41 degrees.

As the week progresses, the probability of rain will also increase, but at the moment nothing is too organized.
