Relative of man killed by police charged with threat

Dayanae Barnes

The niece of a man killed by a police officer in Carol Stream is accused of making threats against police, officials said.

Dajanae T. Barnes, 22, of Carol Stream, is charged with five counts of threatening a public official.

She was arrested Wednesday evening during a protest against the death of 30-year-old Isaac Goodlow III of Carol Stream. A police officer shot Goodlow in his apartment in February.

A DuPage County prosecutor said in a motion for a detention that Barnes said, “I’m going to blow up this building and then watch out when I get out. Then put me in jail for that statement too…”

According to court documents, she also threatened three police officers.

At a detention hearing on Thursday, Barnes’ attorney Andrew Stroth asked the judge to consider the context of the incident.

A few hours earlier, DuPage County Attorney Robert Berlin had announced that he would not prosecute the police officer who shot Goodlow.

“It was an emotional day for the family,” Stroth said. “I am not defending or supporting any of the actions in the video,” he said.

However, Stroth noted that Barnes did not own a weapon and had no interest in contact with Carol Stream police.

“I would ask the court for some degree of mercy,” he added.

Judge Joshua Dieden agreed with prosecutors that Barnes posed a danger to officers and the police department, but he also noted that she has no criminal history, there is no evidence that she owns a gun or has access to one, and that she was a law-abiding citizen until Wednesday.

He ordered her to stay away from the Carol Stream Police Station and to report to the Probation Service for custody.

According to court records, Barnes was also charged with obstruction of justice, resisting a peace officer, mob action and public demonstration/assembly.

Goodlow was killed in his apartment in February by police officers investigating a domestic violence complaint. Berlin said he did not have enough evidence to charge the officer with a crime, but he declined to say the shooting was justified.

The protest took place near a White Castle. According to the petition, police said the people were obstructing traffic. Several people were charged with misdemeanors and traffic violations.
