Hillsdale County deputy killed in shooting; suspect dead after police standoff

HILLSDALE COUNTY, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – A Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was injured in a shooting Thursday has died. Authorities say the suspect died after a standoff.

The shooting occurred in the area of ​​Beecher Road and Lamb Road in Hillsdale County. Police did not immediately release details about the incident.

According to Michigan State Police, the suspect, Eric Michael Fiddler, was later found around 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of Culbert and Osseo roads in Hillsdale County.

“Fiddler was ordered to surrender, pulled out a gun and fired at the officers. The officers returned fire and Fiddler was pronounced dead at the scene,” MSP said. said on X (formerly Twitter)“We regret to report that the deputy who was shot at the scene has succumbed to his injuries. We will not release the deputy’s name at this time until all family members have been notified.”

According to the police, there is no danger to the public.

This is the second fatal shooting involving a deputy within a week.

An 18-year-old man was charged with three counts of lying to police and one count of resisting arrest. No one was charged with Reckling’s murder.
