Fatal shooting in SoHo: 16-year-old Brooklyn boy shot and killed, neighbors say

EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn – A Brooklyn community is outraged and heartbroken after a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in SoHo on Tuesday.

In a doorway at the Rutland Road Houses in East Flatbush, a candlelit memorial commemorates a young life snuffed out by gunfire.

Makhi Brown, known simply as “Kai” to his friends and neighbors, died Tuesday outside a SoHo school when another teenager shot him in the head and fled on a Citi Bike.

Neighbor Ramel Williams told Eyewitness News that he practically raised the 16-year-old, who excelled on the basketball court.

“He loved everyone. He is passionate. He has a good heart and that’s what you need in life – a good heart. He wasn’t one of those stubborn, fancy kids,” Williams said.

According to investigators, on Tuesday afternoon, some boys intervened to break up a fight between two groups of girls on a sidewalk between Spring and Dominick streets. Gunfire ended an altercation and fatally ended the life of a Flatbush teenager.

“If he saw something happening, he would step in and try to solve the problem. He wasn’t a bad kid at all,” said neighbor Lakesha Jenkins.

The search for Brown’s killer continues, but back in Brooklyn, a tight-knit community of friends and neighbors try to comfort a grieving woman who lost her only son just days before Mother’s Day.

“We lean on each other because we are a community and we have to love each other because without love we can’t move forward,” said neighbor Maria Watson.
