Father allegedly killed son in Olmsted Township, police say

Olmsted Township police said a domestic dispute between father and son turned fatal Wednesday night.

Police say a 63-year-old father shot and killed his 29-year-old son at a home on Homestead Drive. Police say the 63-year-old called 9-1-1 around 9 p.m. Wednesday night and said he shot his son after attacking him with a baseball bat.

“He was desperate. The situation devastated him,” said Lieutenant Scott Sonneborn of Olmsted Township.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 29-year-old unconscious and with a gunshot wound to the chest. A 9-millimeter pistol was also allegedly used.

“It was an argument about the baseball bat. It wasn’t about the baseball bat. It was a domestic matter about bills and property,” Sonneborn said.

The son was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The father was taken into custody without charge. Police and prosecutors are still considering whether to press charges.

This is not the first time the police have been called to this address.

In 2020, News 5 reported that a 25-year-old man barricaded himself in his home after pointing a gun at his 30-year-old brother. The standoff led to the neighborhood being evacuated. The father and brother were able to escape the home, and the 25-year-old soon surrendered.

Residents told News 5 that their neighbors had their problems, but that this was the outcome.

“It’s sad. I think he could have been helped one way or another,” said Ron Emery, who has lived next door for more than 20 years.

“No, I just think the way it ended is terrible,” said Helen, Ron’s wife.
