7-Eleven employee in Newport News charged after shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Charges are now being filed against a 7-Eleven employee who police say accidentally shot himself during an altercation.

Newport News police responded to a 7-Eleven in the 12600 block of Nettles Drive shortly after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, in search of a gunshot victim. When officers arrived, they found a man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.


Preliminary investigations revealed that an employee of the business got into an altercation with at least one customer, police said. The altercation took place outside the business and resulted in a physical altercation. The employee accidentally shot himself during the altercation, police said. No one else was injured.

On June 21, Newport News police charged 28-year-old employee Liam Vaughn with discharging a firearm in a public place with injury, a felony, and misdemeanor counts of reckless handling of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
