The offside incident at Real Madrid against Bayern Munich changes everything

Bayern Munich were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League.

An alternative angle to the offside incident during Real Madrid’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich has emerged.

After the first leg in Bavaria ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw, Los Blancos hosted Bayern at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Wednesday evening.

With a place in the final against Borussia Dortmund at stake, both teams showed a subdued first half.

Bayern full-back Alphonso Davies then stunned the Madrid crowd in the 68th minute with a beautiful goal to make it 1-0 for the guests.

But Thomas Tuchel’s side couldn’t hold on as two late goals from Joselu completed another incredible Madrid comeback.

There was heated controversy deep into stoppage time after Matthijs de Ligt shot the ball into the Madrid goal.

However, the goal was not allowed to stand and the VAR could not intervene as the linesman’s flag was in place and the referee whistled the game.

Replays showed the offside decision was close and many suspected the linesman gave in too early.

According to beIN Sports, Noussair Mazraoui was actually onside in the build-up to De Ligt’s shot and the goal would have counted.

De Ligt was the first Bayern player to comment on the incident after the game: “I don’t want to say that Real Madrid always have the referees there, but that made the difference today.”

“Really, if you think they’re dead, exhale one last time… that’s why they have 14 Champions League titles.”

Tuchel then confirmed that the linesman had apologized to him after the game.

The German said: “The linesman apologized but that doesn’t help at this level. The referee does not have to blow the whistle to raise the flag in a close decision at the last minute.

“It’s a very, very bad decision and against the rules. Hard to swallow, but that’s how it is.”

Madrid will face Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1st.
