Buffalo distributes more than $6 million in COVID money

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on many communities across the country. From New York to California, neighborhoods across the United States have suffered massive loss of life and financial consequences as the country has been shut down for more than two years.

To combat this phenomenon and allow communities to rebuild, the federal government has adopted several financial recovery plans to inject resources into communities and get things going again.

Like other parts of the country, Buffalo has received millions from the federal government for this purpose. Buffalo has received more than $330 million in American Rescue Plan funds to help Buffalons get by.

Just over $6 million is now flowing to community groups across Buffalo to help uplift Buffalonians after the Buffalo Common Council approved these payments of American Rescue Plan dollars at its June 25 meeting.

Eleven different organizations will receive a total of $6,273,086.03 from the City.

Organizations like the African American Cultural Center of Buffalo, the Nyamekye Foundation and the Buffalo Urban Development Corporation will all receive at least $1 million each in ARP funds; the remaining eight groups will receive different amounts.

The Colored Musicians Club is getting $500,000, the Italian Cultural Center is getting $100,000, and the Matt Urban Center is getting just under $200,000 – all of these funds should go a long way in helping these groups support Buffalo.
