Dog then in the hands of Hamas

The Israeli military on Thursday denied allegations that one of its dogs attacked an elderly woman in Gaza. Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera published menacing photos showing the dog aggressively attacking the apparently frightened Jabaliya resident.

The military said one of its dogs was kidnapped by terrorists during the fighting in Gaza and was in their custody at the time of the alleged attack. He was later found dead and his body was booby-trapped to blow up soldiers who tried to rescue him.

IDF dog kidnapped and filmed attacking women in Jabaliya

A paratrooper division sent the attack dog and its handler into a building where they were believed to be hiding in search of terrorists. The dog did not return and no sounds of fighting or explosions were heard, the military told Ynet. The troops set out to inspect the building remotely using drones. At first the dog was nowhere to be found, but later it was seen lying stretched out on the street.

The team managed to identify explosive residue from the dog’s body. The explosive was removed from the dog and he was taken to the dog cemetery of the dog squad – Oketz base for burial.

The footage released by Al-Jazeera includes clips from the camera attached to the dog, showing it attacking the elderly woman in her home. She appears to be fighting with the dog on her bed.

However, the Israeli military stated that the dog shown in the video was indeed a member of the dog squad, but had been kidnapped by Hamas along with its equipment.

“The incident occurred after the handler lost contact with his dog,” the Israeli army said. “He had never received orders to harm civilians.” The military added that killing the dog and preparing its body was part of Hamas’ cynical tactics.

IDF denies ordering dog to attack woman

(Photo: IDF Spokesperson Unit)

After the video went viral on social media, the woman, Daulat Abdallah Altanana, was compared to Little Red Riding Hood and the dog to the wolf. “He dragged me from the bedroom to the door and I was injured on my hand,” said the woman, who also claimed to have been displaced from her home during the war.

The footage was provided to Al-Jazeera by northern Gaza correspondent Anas Al Sharif, who is close to Hamas. He is a resident of Jabaliya whose house was bombed in an Israeli strike and whose father was killed. He is known for accompanying Hamas terrorists and documenting their struggles in Jabaliya.
