Jeremy Renner, an A-list actor in Hollywood who has acted in numerous films and was a star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), had a bizarre accident last year when he was run over by a snow plow. The near-fatal accident made headlines around the world, with several of his contemporaries expressing their dismay. It took the actor a long time to recover, nearly a year – learning to do basic things again, like walking and even breathing – and now he has looked back on his painful journey, sharing details about that fateful night and everything he had to endure.

In an interview with Men’s Health The 53-year-old told The New Year magazine that he and his nephew were clearing snow from the driveway on New Year’s Day last year when the accident happened. The snow plow suddenly rolled forward toward his nephew, who was standing in front of it. In order to save him, Renner apparently wanted to turn the machine off immediately, but his “foot got stuck” and the “massive chains pulled his body under the weight of the machine.” That changed his life forever.

The ‘avenger‘ Actor recalled the agonising moments after the crash, telling the station in its July/August edition: “It rocks because there are four sections of tyre with these metal chains – it’s pulling it like a tank. I remember every bump. I remember my head slamming into the thing and it just pressing down on me – it’s exactly as you would imagine. An immovable object and a crushing force… But thank God my skull didn’t completely give way. And then it kept going. Bumpy, bumpy, bumpy, bumpy.”

The ‘Hawkeye‘ star also said his cheekbone and eye socket were broken and his “eye bulged out.” “I could see my left eyeball with my right eyeball. I was screaming for air. I had to squeeze all my energy out of the air just to be able to suck air back in. I couldn’t breathe. It was a muscle I had to use to squeeze, and it’s hard to use your abs when you have 14 broken ribs and a punctured lung,” he was quoted as saying.

As he fought to breathe and survive, Renner also mentally scanned his body, wondering where he had sustained all of his injuries and how severe they were. As he waited for the medical team to arrive, he even wondered if his “difficulty breathing was just a cramp.”

The actor spent the next 12 days in intensive care, most of it flying by. “Showering, going to the bathroom – everything was a disaster. They give you medication not to go to the bathroom, so you get constipated. And you pee in a glass. It was awful. That’s when you know things aren’t going well – you’re peeing in a plastic jug,” the actor told the publication, adding that it took him 17 minutes to even get out of bed.

He couldn’t risk infection, so he avoided proper baths. “I couldn’t get anything wet. Your hair gets super greasy and gross and you stink, but I had all these clips that I couldn’t get wet, and I didn’t want to risk infection. So I washed with a sponge.”

This freak accident left Renner — who has starred in acclaimed films such as ‘American hustle and bustle‘ And ‘Deadly Commando – The Hurt Locker“with more than 38 broken bones, including ribs, pelvis, right knee, right ankle, left leg, left ankle, right collarbone, right shoulder blade, face, wrist, toes and hand.”

His lesson from this life lesson was a Buddhist Mantra: “The only thing we can control in our lives is our perspective.” The actor is grateful to simply be alive today.
