Buffalo pizza project: 2 winners announced in the world ranking

50 Top Pizza, an Italian media company, held its annual ranking of America’s best pizzerias at New York’s Chelsea Market on Tuesday evening.

BUFFALO, NY — Not one, but two of the best pizza slices in the country can be found in Western New York.

This is not a local version of someone here in Buffalo. This is according to 50 Top Pizza, an Italian media company which held its annual ranking of the best American pizzerias at Chelsea Market in New York on Tuesday evening.

Jay’s Artisan Pizza in Kenmore ranks sixth on this list.

“The styles of pizza served here are Neapolitan and Detroit. In both cases, the result is truly amazing, with excellent rise and flavor,” said 50 Top Pizza. “The flavors of the pizzas are not numerous, because the ingredients are fresh and of excellent quality.”

Pizzeria Florian in East Aurora also made the cut, at No. 44.

“The soft dough is covered with a soft and crispy crust that contains typical Italian toppings: Margherita, Funghi e Parmigiano, Cacio e Pepe, and a whole list of ingredients to add on request,” said 50 Top Pizza. “The cooking in the wood-fired oven is a great skill.”

Jay’s and Florian’s Pizzeria helped New York top this year’s rankings. In fact, of the 19 pizzerias in the state that made the cut, the only two that weren’t in New Your City were the ones found here in Western New York. California (14) and Illinois (7) trail New York in the state’s tally.

All seven of Illinois’ pizzerias are in Chicago. Portland, Oregon, fares well in the rankings with six.
