Yuma Police Department 2023 Annual Report

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – On Wednesday evening, the Yuma City Council received the Yuma Police Department’s 2023 annual report along with some possible parking updates.

The police report describes the amount of grants the department received, including over $9,000,000 for the management and maintenance of border security technologies.

“To show what we have done to achieve our statistics goal, what we plan to do in the future and how we spend the money,” said Chief Thomas Garrity of the YPD.

There was also a decrease in property crimes and a slight decrease in social crimes.

“Even though it’s not a dramatic decrease, there is still a decrease. And the good thing is, I know one of the problems right now is traffic and the traffic violations that are being committed. Last year we increased the number of traffic violations that we issued by almost 1,500,” said Chief Thomas Garrity of the YPD.

The mayor expressed his joy at the decline in crime, but still sympathized with the victims of crime.

“If you are a victim of crime, it doesn’t matter what the numbers are. You are a victim and the sympathy for people like that goes out to the victims. But overall, it’s good for the community to see the numbers going down,” said Mayor Doug Nicholls.

As for city parks, some people expressed concerns about a proposed ordinance that would change park closing times from 11 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The City Council will vote on the possible parks update next month.
