No charges against London driver who had an epileptic fit and crashed into a school, killing two children

LONDON — The driver of an SUV that slammed into a southwest London school in July, killing two children, suffered an unpredictable seizure and will not face criminal charges, police said Wednesday.

The vehicle crashed into a group of children celebrating an outdoor graduation ceremony at the Study Prep School in Wimbledon, killing two 8-year-olds, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau. The driver has no recollection of the incident and expressed regret over the disaster.

The police statement said that extensive investigations by specialist officers had revealed that the driver had suffered a previously undiagnosed epileptic seizure, as a result of which she had lost control of the vehicle.

“After a detailed examination of her medical records, we know that she could neither have foreseen nor prevented the incident,” police said.

However, the parents of the two deceased children doubted whether the investigation had been carried out thoroughly.

“We remain unconvinced that the prosecution made a decision based on all the facts,” they said in a joint statement. “Justice has not been done, nor is there any evidence today that it is being done.”

“Nuria and Selena deserve better,” the statement said.

The accident happened about a mile from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which hosts the world-famous Wimbledon tennis tournament from the end of June. Unlike the Grand Slam venue, the school is in a fairly remote area, surrounded by local parks, bridleways and golf courses.

At that time, the police had set up a large cordon around the school and on television images from a bird’s eye view the vehicle could be seen against the wall of the building.
