Fatal accident in Queens: 16-year-old killed, girl injured by truck in front of Intermediate School 125 in Woodside

WOODSIDE, Queens (WABC) – A teenager was killed and a child injured when they were hit by a truck outside a school in Queens on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the corner of 46th Street and 47th Avenue near IS 125 in the Woodside neighborhood.

A box truck was turning right while crossing 46th Street and struck two people: a 16-year-old girl who was killed and an 8-year-old girl who was injured.

The 8-year-old suffered injuries to her head and leg and is in critical condition at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The truck left the scene of the accident. The vehicle and driver were found nearby. The driver is in police custody.

No charges have been filed against the driver while police investigate the incident.

In the meantime, family members, shaken by the grief of the terrible tragedy, had to be helped to get back on their feet.

The hot Wednesday afternoon was the last day of school in the summer.

Normally, a school crossing guard would have been at the intersection at the time of the incident, but because it was the last day of school, the students were dismissed early and the school crossing guard was already off duty.

The investigation is ongoing.
