Seniors in Bellevue attacked by thieves – KIRO 7 News Seattle

BELLEVUE, Washington – Bellevue police are warning of attacks on the elderly across the city.

According to the police, there had previously been a series of robberies in which people between the ages of late 60 and early 90 were specifically targeted.

“A male and female duo approach these elderly people and either offer them a bag of jewelry or ask for directions. In the process, they forcibly take necklaces and watches from the victims,” said Captain Shelby Shearer.

Llayll Fry was attacked near his home on Tuesday evening while collecting the mail.

“She did it so quickly, you know, I thought they wanted directions,” Fry said. “I guess they saw how weak I was and when I came right from the mailbox they stopped the car and opened the door and the lady started talking to me and asking me very nice questions.”

Unfortunately, the couple really had their sights set on his watch.

“I had all these scars and was bleeding, and then they took the Rolex, jumped in the car and drove away,” he said. At least two other similar incidents have been reported.

On June 19, a 71-year-old woman had her Rolex ripped from her wrist after giving directions at the intersection of 124th Avenue and Northeast 2nd Street.

“It’s very manipulative and they actually approach our victims with kindness. They seem to offer them jewelry or ask for directions and when our victims comply and try to be nice, their belongings are taken away,” Shearer said.

On June 17, an elderly couple was stopped at the corner of 108th Avenue Northwest and Northeast 2nd Place by two suspects who spoke a different language. The suspects stated they needed help getting directions to a hospital. As soon as the victims helped them, the suspects ripped one of the victims’ gold chains from their necks.

“We tell our children to be wary of strangers, and that goes for adults too,” Shearer said. Fry, on the other hand, said he was just glad he wasn’t more seriously injured.

“I’ve been all over the world and was in the Vietnam War, so my attitude towards life is what it is and I’ve been through a lot,” Fry said.

If you have any information or know who the suspects are, call Bellevue Police.
