OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — EMSA released an update saying paramedics responded to four calls for heat-related illnesses on Tuesday and transported three patients to local hospitals in the Oklahoma City area.

On Sunday, EMSA issued its second heat medical alert of 2024 for the Oklahoma City area. Since the alert was issued, EMSA medics have responded to 10 calls for heat-related illnesses and transported seven patients to local hospitals.

This is a reminder that extreme heat during the summer months can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Remember to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade if you are outside for long periods of time.

Here are some tips from EMSA to follow to stay protected during the summer heat:

  • PRE-HUMIDINESS is key to preventing heat-related illness. Drink plenty of water or electrolyte drinks several hours before and during prolonged exposure to summer heat.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when working outdoors, and take frequent breaks in the shade.
  • No alcohol or caffeine.
  • If you don’t have air conditioning, find a cooling station or a public place (such as libraries or shopping malls) during the day.
  • Do not restrict the use of the air conditioning.
  • When working outside, use the buddy system and look out for older neighbors.
  • Always carry a mobile phone with you when outdoors, including when walking, running daily errands, gardening, or participating in sports or physical activity.

The EMSA heat warning will remain in effect until temperatures and/or the number of heat-related calls drop significantly.
