Woman’s dog attacked in Liverpool dog park – dog owners worried about safety

LIVERPOOL, NY (WSYR-TV) — When you own a pet, you view your furry friend as if he or she were your own child. Unfortunately for one woman, her dog was the victim of a dog attack at Wegmans Good Dog Park in Liverpool.

Your pet is recovering from multiple injuries.

Wendy Usher, a dog owner, has been coming to the dog park for over a year and has never experienced a dog attack before.

“It just came in and ran straight to the dog,” she said.

A dachshund was attacked by a pit bull, resulting in veterinary bills of over $15,000 and the dog having to have an ear amputated.

“That doesn’t happen here,” Usher said. “Normally they’re all friendly dogs who play together and get along well.”

The incident has dog owners like David Wantz thinking a little more security might be a good thing.

“Maybe you can stop by every now and then and see how things are going,” Wantz said. “I’ve never seen a park ranger here.”

Even without security guards, dog owners say everyone is responsible for their pet’s behavior.

“The dogs here sometimes act rough. People should definitely keep an eye on their animals and be aware when something like this happens,” said Wantz.

“I don’t think anyone should bring their aggressive dogs to a friendly dog park,” Usher said. “If they’re not friendly to the other dogs, they shouldn’t be there.”

Onondaga County park rangers say they recommended to the police chief that the pit bull be allowed into the park only on a leash.

The dachshund’s owner has set up a GoFundMe campaign to pay the vet bills.
