Uneasy calm after suspension of eleven MPs in Oyo Parliament

There was a disturbing calm among members of the Oyo State House of Assembly regarding the planned suspension of eleven members.

It was found that all eleven representatives affected by suspension are first-time members of the California House of Representatives.

According to reports, seven of the lawmakers affected by the suspension belong to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while the remaining four belong to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The seven PDP MPs are Olorunpoto Oluwafemi (representing Oyo East/Oyo West constituency), Olufunke Comforter (representing Ibadan North constituency), Abiodun Babalola (representing Ibadan North East constituency), Waheed Akintayo (representing Oluyole constituency), Bisi Oluranti Micheal (representing Ogbomoso North), Olajide Operinde (representing Afijio constituency) and Dauda Olalere (representing Ibadan North West).

On the other side are APC MPs Ibraheem Shittu (representing Saki West), Abdulazeez Musbau (representing Kajola Constituency), Jimoh Lukman (representing Oorelope Constituency) and Ayinde Waliu (representing Irepo/Olorunsogo Constituency).

According to the Daily Post, sources in the House of Representatives revealed that the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Adebowale Ogundoyin took the decision to suspend these MPs as they were accused of working against the leadership of the House.

A source within the House of Representatives told the Daily Post that the 11 members had previously reported Speaker Adebowale Ogundoyin to the governor.

The sources also mentioned that the 11 MPs accused the Speaker of marginalizing them and mismanaging their Sallah (Eid al-Adha) gifts from the governor.

They mentioned that lawmakers had also made other allegations against the speaker.

One of the sources said: “All eleven members reported the Speaker to the governor. They told the governor that the Speaker had marginalized them and that they were not getting their fair share of the benefits that the Speaker was receiving. Eleven of them.”

It was found that certain affected MPs had relocated to protect themselves from the threat of suspension.

However, when asked, one of the MPs named Waheed Akintayo stated that he had not violated any rules of the House of Representatives.

During a telephone conversation with the media platform on Wednesday, Akintayo stressed that he had no grudge against the governor or the speaker.

He said, “I don’t know anything about what you are talking about. I don’t know the source of the story. But what I can tell you is that I have not done anything that violated the ethics of the House. The governor is my leader. I have nothing against the governor or the speaker. The House is working, and the work of the House is going smoothly.”

When contacted on the development, the Special Adviser to the Speaker of Parliament on Media, Oyetunji Oyekunle, said Parliament would take up the issue on Thursday.

He said: “Parliament will meet tomorrow to discuss the issue. It will meet tomorrow, Thursday, to discuss the matter.”
