Lakewood police shot and killed a suspect Wednesday morning. According to investigators, it started with a threatening and carjacking call at the Walmart store at 4th and Wadsworth streets.

Lakewood Police Public Information Officer John Romero said employees at the Walmart said an adult male threatened them with a gun around 10:20 a.m. The man fled the store without causing any physical injuries.

A short time later, a woman was assaulted in the area of ​​W. 4th Avenue and Zephyr Street. The victim told police that she was sitting in a minivan when an adult male pointed a gun at her and ordered her to get out of the minivan. The suspect then sped away in the stolen vehicle. His description matched that of the Walmart suspect.

Police began searching for the suspect, found the stolen minivan and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect refused to stop and officers began a pursuit. They continued to pursue the suspect to the 6th Avenue and Garrison exit in Lakewood when the pursuit ended in a crash.

Police said the suspect crashed the stolen minivan into a red SUV and the minivan ended up on the embankment on the side of 6th Avenue. Officers ordered the suspect to get out of the minivan, but as he exited the vehicle, he pointed his gun at officers.

Then the agents shot him. According to Lakewood police, six agents shot at the suspect. No other people were injured and there are no other suspects. A pistol was recovered at the scene.

The CBS News Colorado helicopter flew over the crime scene at 6th Avenue and Garrison, where several police vehicles were located, immediately after the shooting. Parts of the exit from 6th Avenue were cordoned off with police tape. There were also police vehicles blocking traffic.

After several hours of investigation and cleanup, traffic in the area resumed.

The suspect has not been identified.
