25 dogs removed from house in Monte Alto after fatal dog attack

MONTE ALTO, Texas (ValleyCentral) – Hidalgo County officials have removed more than two dozen dogs from a Monte Alto residence where an 85-year-old woman died after being attacked by her black pit bull mix.

Approximately 25 dogs were removed by the county from a residence in rural Monte Alto, 22,000 block of Jesus Flores Road.

Geronima Florez was killed in front of her home on Friday night when she went to feed her dogs and was attacked by one of the dogs.

The dog that attacked Florez was shot with a shotgun by Florez’s brother, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Sergeant Enrique Longoria of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said Florez would take in strays and feed them out of the goodness of his heart.

After the attack, the family no longer wanted the 25 dogs and contacted the county to pick them up.

Most of the dogs Florez took in were puppies, Longoria added.
