Prosecutors say toddlers in Lakewood, New Jersey, were killed by their own mother

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A mother from Lakewood, New Jersey, is suspected of killing her own children on Tuesday. They were 1 and 3 years old.

The Ocean County District Attorney’s Office said the 1-year-old was found with stab wounds and both children drowned.

Her mother, 27-year-old Naomi Elkins, is now facing murder charges.

Tragedy on Shenandoah Drive in Lakewood

The district attorney’s office said Lakewood police responded to a 911 call that two children had suffered cardiac arrest on Shenandoah Drive shortly before 5 p.m.

When officers arrived, Hatzolah Medical Services was attempting to rescue the children, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators concluded that Elkins was responsible for her death.

She was taken into custody and transported to the Ocean County Jail where she awaits her detention hearing.

Elkins was charged with two counts of murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

No further details about the incidents have been released so far.

Lakewood is in Ocean County, about 35 miles east of Trenton. Video from the scene appears to show a multi-story home with a garage and two vehicles in the driveway. A basketball hoop and children’s toys can also be seen in the yard.
