Former Westland police officer faces trial over incident at Detroit casino

(WWJ) A former Westland Police sergeant has been put on trial for ethnic intimidation and assault in connection with an alleged incident at a Detroit casino.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday that 42-year-old Kevin Yudt of Grass Lake will stand trial for crimes he committed while off duty on April 6, 2023.

According to investigators, Yudt and a friend were at the MGM Grand Detroit when security guards denied them entry to the casino because Yudt appeared to be intoxicated.

After being denied entry, Yudt allegedly identified himself as a Westland police sergeant and told security guards, “I will be waiting for you when you get to Westland and you will not survive.” He also allegedly stabbed the security guard in the chest while shouting racial slurs, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Yudt was fired from the Westland Police Department in May 2023.

He now faces trial on two counts of ethnic intimidation, each punishable by two years in prison, and two counts of assault, each punishable by 93 days in prison.

“My office takes allegations of ethnic intimidation and assault very seriously and will prosecute perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law,” Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a press release issued Wednesday.

Yudt is next scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court in Wayne County on Tuesday morning, July 9.
