Akron Police: Suspect charged in fatal shooting and car crash

Kato Yanzanes turned himself in on Tuesday. He is accused of murdering Brandon Daniels on June 13. Daniels was shot at least twice and later drove his car into a pole.

AKRON, Ohio – Akron police have announced an arrest in their investigation into the fatal shooting of a 38-year-old man earlier this month.

According to a department press release, officials reported that 23-year-old Kato Yanzanes turned himself in to law enforcement on Tuesday and was charged with murder in connection with the death of Brandon Daniels.

Police responded to multiple calls shortly after 7:15 p.m. on June 13 reporting a vehicle had struck a pole in the 600 block of West Thornton Street. While the calls were coming in, an officer patrolling the area called emergency services after observing that the driver (Daniels) had been shot at least twice.

Emergency medical services took Daniels to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center. He died the next day.

In their press release, Akron police said their investigators determined that Daniels was shot in the 900 block of Snyder Street and drove away before hitting the pole. Investigators also found shell casings on Snyder Street.

After collecting evidence and interviewing neighbors, investigators were able to link Yanzanes to Daniel’s death, according to Akron police.

“During the course of the investigation, detectives determined that Yanzanes was involved in an ongoing argument with the victim on the day of the incident,” Akron police officials said.

After his arrest, Yanzanes was taken to the Summit County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Akron Municipal Court on Wednesday.
