Longmont police arrested a man who was reportedly brandishing a knife

Longmont police arrested a man who was reportedly armed with a knife during a domestic violence incident in the 1300 block of Coffman Street on Wednesday, according to a Facebook post from Longmont Public Safety spokesperson Robin Ericson.

Police contacted the man and gave him repeated commands to drop the knife, but he did not comply, Ericson said in the Facebook post.

The man did not comply with this request and ran toward an occupied residential building armed with the knife, the post says.

After the suspect ignored repeated commands, two officers attempted to use deadly force to prevent the suspect from entering the property. According to the post, at least one officer fired a firearm. According to the post, the suspect still refused to comply.

Additional officers then used less-lethal options until the man complied and dropped the weapon.

According to the post, officers at the scene rendered aid before medical personnel arrived.

The suspect was then taken to a local hospital. His current health status has not been released.

According to the post, the victim reported no serious injuries and no officers were injured in the incident.

Per Longmont Public Safety policy, officers who attempted to use deadly force were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the external investigation.

The 20th Judicial District Critical Incident Team is investigating the case.

This multi-agency team is designed to investigate incidents in which police officers in the 20th Judicial District use physical or deadly force against a person in the performance of their official duties.

In accordance with Boulder County protocol, Longmont police will not participate in the use of force investigation, the release said.
