Baker man arrested after drugs and weapons found during traffic stop in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – A traffic stop in Baton Rouge ended with a prison sentence for a man facing multiple charges.

Byron Brock, 19, of Baker, was charged with speeding, seat belt use, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegally carrying a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance, and manufacture, distribution, or possession with intent to distribute Schedule I.

A member of the Baton Rouge Police Department caught a vehicle speeding 20 mph around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 23. Police said a 2017 Nissan Elantra was observed going 60 mph in a 40 mph zone in the 3800 block of Perkins Road.

Brock was identified as the driver and BRPD said he was not wearing a seatbelt when the officer made contact with him.

The officer saw a gun and “a plastic bag containing a green, leafy substance that I knew to be marijuana,” the BRPD said.

Brock was informed he was under arrest and told the officer that he “had just purchased the gun at a pawn shop and that there was additional marijuana in a book bag in the vehicle,” the affidavit states.

A search of the Elantra revealed a loaded rifle, a bag containing about two grams of marijuana and a 40-round magazine, the BRPD said. In addition, “they found several plastic bags, a plastic container containing marijuana and a digital scale in the book bag,” the BRPD said.

More marijuana and another digital scale were found in a second book bag in the trunk.

Brock said he did not want to do a DNA swab.

The Baker man was arrested on Sunday, June 23, and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail. He was released from jail on Monday, June 24.
