AMSTERDAM (AP) — In sometimes violent clashes, police broke up a protest by pro-Palestinian activists at the University of Amsterdam on Wednesday, marking the second straight day of unrest across the city of Amsterdam War in Gaza.

After police ended a blockade on the university campus, hundreds of demonstrators moved to a nearby square to continue protesting late into the night, demanding an end to the war. Some called on the university to cut academic ties with Israel.

It was unclear whether and how many people were injured in the clashes and how many demonstrators were arrested by police.

Also at Utrecht University, about 45 kilometers (30 miles) south, students occupied a university building to protest Israeli actions in the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Student protests have gained momentum across Europe after similar actions took place at US universities, where several camps have spread.

The war began after Palestinian militant groups attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostage in a surprise attack. According to local health authorities, more than 34,700 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory military operation devastated the Gaza Strip.
