Bayern Munich star Manuel Neuer looks back on the devastating skiing accident that almost ended his career

On a fateful day in the final days of 2022, on a snowy slope in Italy, the world of FC Bayern Munich changed instantly.

After the bitterly disappointing elimination in the group stage of the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer – Germany’s number 1 – wanted to vent his frustration on skis. But a freak accident ended his season and almost his career.

“I don’t know what my life would be like if I couldn’t play football anymore. If you asked the medical staff and the rehab team, they wouldn’t believe where I am today. I think probably only one or two out of ten people would recover from this injury,” Neuer revealed in a recent interview with UEFA.com, recorded by @iMiaSanMia.

The aftermath of Neuer’s injury changed the fortunes of many and sent Bayern’s promising 2022 season into a downward spiral. Now, however, Neuer is back and stronger than ever – and despite recent setbacks on the pitch with Bayern, he has been tasked by national coach Julian Nagelsmann to once again be the man between the posts at what could be his final tournament, EURO 2024.
